Working group for church music and pastoral care for young people in the Diocese of Limburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The working group for church music and pastoral care for young people in the Diocese of Limburg was the name of a former committee that was concerned with the creation and dissemination of, based on its understanding, more contemporary sacred music . The working group worked from 1970 to 2012.

founding

The Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) formulated the following passage in the Constitution on Sacred Liturgy for the initiative of the Working Group on Church Music and Pastoral Care for Young People:

“ Filled with the Christian spirit, church musicians may be aware that it is their calling to cultivate church music and to increase its treasure. They should create settings which have the characteristics of real church music and which can not only be sung by larger choirs, but are also adapted to smaller choirs and promote the active participation of the entire community of believers. "

- Vaticanum II : paragraph 121

Triggered by the council, sacred songs in the styles of Negro spirituals , gospel songs , jazz , beat , rock , pop and folk music were created in German-speaking countries around 1970 . At the same time, in 1970, the working group was founded.

Tasks of the working group

The founders saw their task in helping the congregations to find new and more contemporary songs. The aim was to musically pick up on the attitude towards life and the topics of young people and young adults. In its statute of January 3, 1972, the working group for church music and youth pastoral care in the Diocese of Limburg defined its tasks as follows:

  1. Observation and critical selection of new forms of church music for children, youth and community worship
  2. Material presentations for communities and groups
  3. Practical advice for instrumental and vocal groups
  4. Granting of grants for the musical design of youth services and for the purchase of instruments and amplification systems
  5. Creation of new songs (composition orders, organ sets, arrangements, workshop work)

development

In the creation and selection of songs, the working group has endeavored to take up the experiences of the present in terms of content and to interpret them from the perspective of believers. In the 1980s, the working group developed a catalog of criteria that describes textual and musical requirements for songs in order to be published in publications. Some of the songs have found their way into the main part and diocesan appendices of the Catholic Church of God as well as into the main part or regional appendices of the Evangelical Hymnal .

The then diocesan youth pastor Rudolf Lutter and the head of the office for church music, Ordinariatsrat Paul Gutfleisch, anchored youth and church music together. In addition, the working group contributed to the dissemination of the newly created songs in events and invited choirs, bands and communities to qualify.

In the same year, the working group was dissolved in its previous form by the Diocese of Limburg and now continued under the name New Spiritual Song in the Diocese of Limburg under the leadership of the Pastoral Services Department .

Patrik Dehm then founded the ecumenical association in TAKT e. V. , in order to further promote and support the work on the new spiritual songs in the future.
