A work machine is a driven machine that absorbs energy in the form of mechanical work . It is the counterpart to the drive or motor , also known as the prime mover , which emits mechanical energy. In conjunction with the drive, the driven machine is sometimes also referred to as the output .

The working machine is connected to the drive via a mechanism. Often this is a rotating shaft . However, other forms such as rods , levers , ropes and belts are also possible. The engine and machine can be separated from each other with a clutch . Gears can also be used for transmission .

Work machines generate electricity or convey, crush, deform, compress, mix or seven solids .

Some machines can both absorb and release energy, they can switch between prime mover and work machine. Examples are the flywheel , the pump turbine and the motor generator .

Working machines that supply the absorbed energy to a fluid - a liquid or a gas - belong to the fluid energy machines . Examples are pumps , compressors , blowers and fans . Fluid energy machines can also be prime movers that extract energy from the fluid, which energy is then released as mechanical work.
