Arbuthnott Parish Church

The Arbuthnott Parish Church is a parish of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish scattered settlement Arbuthnott in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The church was built in the early 13th century. It initially acted as a branch church of the Marienstift in St Andrews . On August 3, 1242 consecrated David de Bernham , Bishop of St Andrews , the church. In the course of the 15th century it received an extension, which was known as the Marienkapelle. In 1491 the minister wrote James Sibbald there the Missal Missal of Arbuthnott . In 1896, Alexander Marshall Mackenzie modernized the building. Presumably today the choir is essentially of medieval origin. At an unspecified point in time, its use as a collegiate monastery ended and the church continued to be used as a parish church.

description

The Arbuthnott Parish Church stands on a plateau above the Bervie Waters around 600 m southeast of Arbuthnott. The sandstone church is considered a good example of medieval Scottish church architecture. Robert Arbuthnott of that Ilk had the bell tower on the west side built in 1500.
