Belginum Archaeological Park
The Belginum Archeology Park is an archaeological museum and open-air museum in the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Wederath in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Hunsrückhöhenstrasse . His topic is the Roman settlement ( Vicus ) Belginum in the Hunsrück . The place was on the Roman road from Trier to Bingen , the Ausoniusstraße named after Decimius Magnus Ausonius .
The museum shows grave finds from several Iron Age burial grounds, the everyday life of the Roman provincial population in the ancient Belginum and explains the work of archaeologists. Furthermore, changing exhibitions on historical-cultural topics take place here.
The excavation site received its archaeological importance from the 4th century BC. Chr. , The Hunsrück-Eifel culture , continuously used burial ground through the late Latène period up to the 4th century AD . In addition to the actual settlement and the burial ground, excavations in Belginum have revealed several temple districts and an early Roman military camp that was probably only used for a short time . The Roman vicus is listed in the Tabula Peutingeriana , a late Roman road map from the 5th century, which, however, is largely based on maps from the 3rd century.
The results of the scientific studies and excavations are exhibited in the museum.
The Belginum Archaeological Park was founded in 2002 after 50 years of intensive research. Archaeological finds have been known regularly since the 17th century . In the museum the results of the archaeological excavations are shown to the visitors under the theme “Life on a trunk road” . The approximately 1,000 meter long circular hiking trail leads past a burial ground with burial mounds , the former Roman settlement, the military camp and a well. All stations are explained with informative boards. The Belginum Archaeological Park offers a wide range of museum educational activities, regularly changing special exhibitions and lectures.
The museum is supported by the Archäologiepark Belginum e. V. supports.
Since the section of the Hunsrückquerbahn between Büchenbeuren and Morbach was put back into operation as a tourist railway in 2009, a stop for visitors to the archeology park has been set up at the former US loading station in Zolleiche .
