Arctic is an Icelandic film drama by director Joe Penna from 2018. It takes place in an uninhabited arctic region and is about a man who, as the only survivor of a plane crash, brings a woman who has come to his rescue, but also has an accident, to a rescue place with a sled wants to transport.

action

After the crash of a passenger plane in an unpopulated, arctic, heavily snow-covered and icy mountain region, the pilot Overgård is the only survivor. He lives in the broken fuselage of the aircraft and feeds on raw fish from a nearby frozen lake. The cold is so hard on him that at least one toe has frozen to death. Hoping to be rescued, he has carved a huge SOS symbol in the ice and regularly sends out radio signals with a special device. One day these help a helicopter to locate it. During the approach, however, the helicopter crashes, the pilot dies and the co-pilot is seriously injured. Overgård retrieves the woman from the broken helicopter, brings her to his plane and makes a makeshift medical treatment for her cut on the stomach. Communication is hardly possible because of their state of exhaustion and the different languages. After finding an ice sled in the helicopter and a - largely unlabeled - map of the region, he decides to take the woman several kilometers to a rescue point. He pulls the woman who is lying in a sleeping bag on the sled behind him. After a few kilometers he realizes that he cannot conquer a rocky mountain with a sledge. Therefore he is forced to take a big detour. He and the woman sometimes spend the night in caves made of snow or rock. While they are sleeping in a rock cave, a polar bear attacks the shelter. Overgård drives him off with a signal rocket . On the following hike, food supplies are running low and Overgård's fingers begin to freeze to death. In addition, the woman is worse off because her wound has become infected. On the way, Overgård breaks in on the blanket of snow and falls into a cave, with his leg trapped. He frees himself in great pain. He keeps a gaping flesh wound on his leg, which he then splinters poorly. Limping, freezing and over deep snow, he pulls the sled with the woman towards his destination. When he discovers a landed helicopter with two pilots a few hundred meters away, he tries to draw attention to himself with another signal rocket and the burning of his jacket, but obviously in vain as the helicopter flies away. Close to his death and the woman's death, he sinks to the ground. Seconds later and in the last shot of the film, a helicopter can be seen landing behind them.
