Arenifera is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Latin words arena for 'sand' and ferre for 'to carry' and refers to the fact thatsand accumulateson the foliage leaves of the type species Arenifera pillansii .

description

The species of the genus Arenifera grow as a shrub up to 40 centimeters in height. The lateral short shoots appear curled through the leaf scars. Their leaves are triangular to sharp triangular. The cells of their epidermis are thinly papillated , the outer epidermis wall contains varying amounts of crystal sand . The therein stomata are vaulted and therefore slightly recessed.

The inflorescence bears bracts . The flowers have four to five sepals and pink petals . The up to 25 filamentous staminodes are completely purple or white in the lower area. They surround the stamens in a loose cone. The nectarium forms a lophomorphic ring.

The six to eightfold fruits are funnel-shaped at their base. Their valve wings are wide or absent. The narrow closure bodies form a small cap. The fruits contain elongated, pear-shaped seeds .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Arenifera is distributed in South Africa in the northwest of the North Cape Province and in the west of the Western Cape Province on gravelly plains or gentle, rocky slopes. The species grow in areas with rainfall of less than 100 millimeters annually, which falls mainly in winter.
