The Argentine nightshade ( Solanum physalifolium ), also called glossy fruity nightshade , is a species of the nightshade genus ( Solanum ) within the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

Habitus, indument , leaves and flower

The Argentine nightshade is an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 40 centimeters. The above-ground parts of the plant are hardly sticky and without a noticeable odor. The stem, which is round in cross section, is densely covered with glandular hairs.

The calyx covers the lower half of the berry. The calyx lobes are 2.5 to 3.5 mm long, broadly triangular and connected with each other by blunt rounded bays.

The flowering period extends from June to September. The inflorescence contains four to eight flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold.

The dark green to brown-purple berries contain around 15 to 25 brown seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The original distribution area of the Argentine nightshade is in western South America (especially Chile).

The Argentine nightshade inhabits ruderal sites and fields. In Germany it is a naturalized neophyte and occurs in Mannheim , Heidelberg and in the entire Rhine-Main area . In Central Europe it is a species of the Chenopodietea class.

The first publication of Solanum physalifolium was by Henry Hurd Rusby . Synonyms for Solanum physalifolium Rusby are: Solanum nitidibaccatum Bitter , Solanum physalifolium var. Nitidibaccatum (Bitter) Edmonds . Solanum physalifolium belongs to the Solanum section within the genus Solanum .
