Argutite , chemically germanium (IV) oxide , is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of oxides and hydroxides . It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system with the chemical composition GeO 2 and forms hypidiomorphic crystals up to 20 μm in size, embedded in sphalerite .
Etymology and history
The mineral was first discovered in 1983 by Z. Johan, E. Oudin and P. Picot in a deposit near Argut-Dessous in the French department of Haute-Garonne and named after them.
classification
In the Strunz system , argutite is counted among the oxides with a ratio of metal to oxygen of 1: 2. After the 8th edition and 9th edition , it forms the rutile group with pyrolusite , cassiterite , paratellurite , plattnerite , rutile and tripuhyite , and in the ninth edition, tugarinovite and varlamoffite .
In the Dana system , it forms the rutile group with ilmenorutil , rutile, struverite , cassiterite, plattnerite, pyrolusite, squawcreekite and stishovite , a subgroup of the simple oxides with a cation charge of 4+.
Education and Locations
Argutite formed in a zinc deposit in metamorphic sedimentary rock. It is associated with sphalerite, cassiterite, siderite and briartite .
In addition to the type locality , some other finds are known in Couflens and Saint-Girons in the Ariège department , Luchon and Saint-Béat in the Haute-Garonne department and Lourdes in the Hautes-Pyrénées department (all France).
Crystal structure
Argutite crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system in the space group P 4 2 / mnm with the lattice parameters a = 4.398 Å and c = 2.863 Å, as well as two formula units per unit cell .
