Arif Ünal (born November 15, 1953 in Korkmaz, Göksun , Turkey ) is a German politician ( Alliance 90 / The Greens ). From 2010 to 2017 he was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament .

Life and work

Ünal studied chemical engineering in Turkey . In 1979 he traveled to his brother in West Germany to take a vacation there. Since Ünal campaigned for the student movement to have a democratic say, he was at risk in the Republic of Turkey, which was facing a military coup . He decided to stay in the Federal Republic of Germany. After successfully completing a medical degree in Germany, he completed a degree in social work.

Since 1995, Ünal has headed the health center for migrants in Cologne , which is affiliated to the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, and the social psychiatric competence center for migration in the Rhineland Regional Council . From 1999 to October 2009 he was the spokesperson for health and migration policy for the Cologne parliamentary group.

In addition, Ünal is active on the supervisory board of the clinics of the city of Cologne , on the advisory board and board of trustees of the Porzer Klinik am Rhein, at the municipal health conference, the round table for refugee issues, the advisory commission on foreigners law, the advisory board for the forensic clinic in Cologne and the PSAG (psychosocial working group ) and is a member of the advisory board of AIDS-Hilfe , the Cologne JVA and the North Rhine-Westphalia regional association of the THW .

Ünal appeared repeatedly on Turkish television on issues of integration policy.

Ünal has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 1998. Since 2010 he has been the spokesman for the state working group on immigrants and a member of the state working group on health.

In May 2010 he was elected to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia at number 22 on the state list of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. As a direct candidate in the Cologne VI state electoral district , he took third place with 20.1% of the vote. On the occasion of his swearing-in as a member of parliament, he applied on behalf of his parliamentary group to change the traditional oath formula "on the welfare of the German people" to "on the welfare of all people in North Rhine-Westphalia". Ünal justified the application with the approximately two million people without a German passport who live in North Rhine-Westphalia . The proposal was accepted by the state parliament, but since the oath formula is laid down in the state constitution, this change has not yet come into force, but is a point in the work of the constitutional commission. In the state elections in 2012 , he was re-elected via the state list. He did not run for the state election in 2017 .

In the 15th electoral term he was chairman of the integration committee, member of the committee for work, health and social affairs and a deputy member of the committee for family, children and youth, and he was also the health policy spokesman for the Green parliamentary group in the state parliament.

Honors

On October 14, 2015, the federal government awarded Arif Ünal the integration medal. Minister of State Aydan Özoğuz presented him with the award during a ceremony in the Federal Chancellery in Berlin. With the medal eight people are honored each year, which is characterized by outstanding personal commitment in a special way to the integration have rendered outstanding.
