When he was seventeen, he signed his first contract with the I-League club Churchill Brothers SC . He stayed there at least until the summer of 2011, according to other sources until the summer of 2012 when he moved to Mohun Bagan AC . In 2014, his first of a total of three sections at FC Pune City , a football franchise from Pune , a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, followed . There he came on ten missions on the starting line-up and one substitution, which ultimately led to a total of 940 minutes.

For the 2015 season he moved to Bharat FC, which is also based in Pune. Despite massive investments by the owner Bharat Forge , the season ended in last place. Due to the sporting failure and other reasons, the investor lost interest in the vehicle, whereupon the Indian football association All India Football Federation (AIFF) did not issue a license for the I-League for the following season, as there were no significant financial and personal requirements by the deadline were fulfilled. Bhattacharya then moved back to Pune City in the Indian Super League after playing 17 full playing time or 1,530 minutes for Bharat FC.

In his second season at this club, his playing time was reduced to about a third or four times over the full distance (360 minutes). In addition, he was on the bench in nine games. This was followed by another trip to the I-League, this time to Sporting Goa, where he spent four times the time on the field: 16 games over 90 minutes (cumulative 1,440 minutes). In comparison, he then spent a rather quiet season on his third guest appearance at Pune City, where he sat on the bench twelve times and only stood on the field once - but then for the entire duration of the game. He then turned his back on the Indian Super League again to play for Bengaluru FC in the I-League. He was on the starting line-up six times in the 2017 season (one substitution) and was on the bench in 13 games, which meant a total of 501 minutes on the pitch.

For the 2017/2018 season it went to the soccer franchise Mumbai City FC and then to Atlético de Kolkata (ATK).

National team

Bhattacharya competed with the Indian national soccer team at the 2009 South Asian Cup. In the eighth edition of this competition, the team reached the final, in which India beat the Maldives 3-1 on penalties. Bhattacharya saved two penalties.

He had to forego participating in the 2011 Asian Football Championship due to an injury.

Others

Bhattacharya was briefly arrested in January 2011 but released on bail a few hours after allegedly beating up a traffic policeman. He told the media that his job was to play football - and not fights with the police. He could not understand the allegations and consider them to be constructed. However, shortly thereafter, a court sentenced him to a day's imprisonment.
