Ariocarpus retusus subsp. trigonus is a subspecies of Ariocarpus retusus from the genus Ariocarpus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet trigonus of the subspecies comes from the Greek , means 'triangular' and refers to the shape of the warts. The species is in CITES Appendix I listed.
description
Ariocarpus retusus subsp. trigonus grows individually and can reach up to 30 centimeters in diameter. Older plants tend to form groups. The numerous warts are glossy brownish-gray-green, curved up, equilateral, pointed, triangular and keeled sharply back to the base. They are 3 to 8 inches long and between 1.5 and 2.5 inches wide at the base. The areoles on the horny, slightly breaking tip are barely visible.
The root is a very thick beet root . The yellowish, up to 50 millimeters long and wide flowers appear numerous and are arranged in a wreath around the woolly apex.
distribution
Ariocarpus retusus subsp. trigonus is native to the Mexican states of Nuevo León and Tamaulipas . It is distributed there on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental north of Monterrey , between Montemorelos and Linares , in the valley from Jaumave to south of Jaumauve. It grows on the top of flat limestone hills in coarse, sandy-gravelly substrate at altitudes between 500 and 1200 meters.
Systematics
The first description as Anhalonium trigonum by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber was published in 1893. Edward Frederick Anderson and Walter Alfred Fitz Maurice put the species in 1997 as a subspecies of Ariocarpus retusus . A nomenclatory synonym is Ariocarpus trigonus (FACWeber) K.Schum. (1898).
Danger
Ariocarpus retusus subsp. trigonus is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified as not endangered in nature.
