Armando Baptista-Bastos
Armando Baptista-Bastos (born February 27, 1934 in Lisbon , Portugal ; † May 9, 2017 ibid) was a Portuguese novelist , essayist , political journalist , columnist , casual actor and television presenter. He was one of the busiest journalists in Portugal after the Carnation Revolution .
Life
Baptista-Bastos, as he was commonly known, attended the Liceu Frances in Lisbon, as well as the Escola Artes Decorativas António Arroio there. He began his journalistic career at the daily O Século , where he was promoted to deputy editor-in-chief at the age of 19. There he also wrote film reviews. As a political activist and supporter of the presidential candidate General Humberto Delgado , he was dismissed in 1960 and started at Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP), the Portuguese television, where he wrote news texts as an editor under the pseudonym "Manuel Trindade" as well as worked on documentaries.
After working at RTP, he was employed as an editor, columnist, reporter, correspondent for various newspapers and magazines, such as República, Europeu, O Diário, Cartaz, Almanaque, Seara Nova, Gazeta musical e de todas as artes, Época and Sábado. He also worked in the Lisbon editorial office of the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP).
For more than thirty-three years he worked as an editor for the Diário Popular newspaper (1965 to 1988).
After working for Diário Popular , he wrote for various other newspapers and magazines, such as Jornal de Notícias, the sports newspaper A Bola, Tempo livre, Jornal de Letras, artes e ideias, Expresso and Correio do Minho. He founded the magazine O Ponto (The Point). In radio he worked for Antenna 1 and Rádio Commercial, for which he wrote radio features . As a commentator he worked for Radio TSF and as a columnist for Público , Diário Económico and, until recently, for the Diário de Lisboa .
For television, he mainly moderated political talk shows, for example on TV Sic from 1996 to 1998 , and worked as an occasional actor and guest actor in various television series.
In his professional career, he has often traveled abroad, mainly as a correspondent and reporter. He worked for Portuguese media in Spain , France , Italy , Belgium , Ireland , Brazil , Uruguay , Argentina , Switzerland , Luxembourg , Greece , Austria , Turkey , the GDR , the FR of Germany , Czechoslovakia , the USSR , Morocco , Sweden , Denmark , Finland , Nigeria , Angola , Mozambique , Cape Verde .
His essayistic and journalistic book As palavras dos outros is used for courses at universities in Germany and abroad, especially in the lusophone world.
Excerpts from his work, such as columns, guest articles, novel excerpts and articles have been translated into various languages, such as Czech, Bulgarian, Russian, German, Castilian and French.
He can also be seen in the 1964 documentary Belarmino , part of the Novo Cinema in Portugal and about the career of the unsuccessful Portuguese boxer Belarmino Fraga .
