Armin Schmitt

Armin Schmitt (born June 9, 1934 in Eußenheim ; † October 18, 2006 in Würzburg ) was a Catholic theologian and professor of exegesis of the Old Testament at the University of Regensburg .

biography

After attending grammar school in Würzburg, Armin Schmitt studied Catholic theology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and was ordained a priest in 1960 . In addition to his pastoral work, he devoted himself to research and received his doctorate in theology from the University of Würzburg in 1963 . He then deepened his Old Testament studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

In 1966, Armin Schmitt became a research assistant at the chair for Old Testament exegesis at Josef Ziegler's theological faculty of the University of Würzburg . In 1972 he completed his habilitation and became a private lecturer and, in 1978, an adjunct professor at the faculty, before being appointed Professor of Exegesis of the Old Testament at the University of Osnabrück in 1980 and Professor of Biblical Theology and Exegesis of the Old Testament at the University of Regensburg in 1984. Here he taught and researched until his retirement in 2000.

From the estate and in memory of Armin Schmitt, the Armin Schmitt Foundation for Biblical Text Research was founded in Würzburg in 2006 .
