Arnaldo Niskier (born April 30, 1935 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian journalist , politician , writer and university professor . In 1984 he was elected to the Academia Brasileira de Letras , the Brazilian Academy of Literature. From 1997 to 1999 he was its president.

Life

Arnaldo Niskier is the son of Mordko Majer Niskier and Fany Niskier, a Jewish couple who immigrated to Brazil from Poland ( Ostrowiec ) in the early 1930s. After graduating in mathematics , he received his doctorate in education in 1964 at the Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and attended additional courses: in 1976 at the Escola Superior de Guerra military college in Rio de Janeiro, in 1994/95/96 at the Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania held an international retirement fund seminar . From 1968 until his retirement in 1995 he taught the history and philosophy of education at the Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro.

From 1968 to 1971 he was State Secretary for Science and Technology of Guanabara , now the State of Rio de Janeiro ; 2004 to 2006 State Secretary for Culture ; In 2006 he became State Secretary for Education and then from 2006 to 2009 Education Minister of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

From 1968 to 1979 he was director of the journalism department of one of the most important publishing houses in Brazil at the time , Bloch Editores. In the fields of culture and science, especially in education and training , but also in business, Niskier advises institutions and heads committees that are important for the state of Rio de Janeiro and all of Brazil.

In 1969 he initiated the Fritz Feigl Prize (Prêmio Fritz Feigl) and in 1970 the construction of the planetarium in Rio de Janeiro. He campaigned for the National Program for Education via TV (PRONTEL, Programa Nacional de Teleducação). He himself worked as a television journalist , director and presenter , especially in the education sector.

Niskier is involved in institutions of Jewish culture in Brazil: The Academic Council of the Center for Jewish-Brazilian Culture, (Conselho Acadêmico do Centro de Cultura Judaico-Brasileiro); the Center for Jewish History and Culture (Centro de História e Cultura Judaica) in Rio de Janeiro; the Brazilian Jewish Association (Conselho Superior da Confederação Israelita do Brasil (CONIB)); and the House of Culture of Israel in Sao Paulo (Casa de Cultura de Israel).

Honors

Arnaldo Niskier was admitted to the Academia Brasileira de Letras, the Brazilian Academy of Literature in Rio de Janeiro on March 22, 1984. He is the seventh owner of the seat number 18 named after João Francisco Lisboa , succeeding Peregrino Júnior (João PJ da Rocha Fagundes). From 1997 to 1999 Arnaldo Niskier was the 43rd President of the Academia Brasileira de Letras.

He is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon (Academia das Ciências de Lisboa).
