Arndt Bode (born September 20, 1948 in Augsburg ) is a German computer scientist and former holder of the chair for computer technology and computer organization at the faculty for computer science at the Technical University of Munich .

life and work

Arndt Bode received his doctorate in 1975 at the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) with Alfred Schmitt on the subject of dialogue systems for computer-aided teaching. In 1984 he completed his habilitation with Wolfgang Händler at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and in 1987 accepted a position at the Technical University of Munich. There he holds the chair for computer technology and computer organization at the Faculty of Computer Science.

Bode is an internationally recognized expert in the field of computer architecture , especially in the area of design and programming of parallel and distributed systems. From 1976 to 1987 he played a leading role in the first large parallel computer projects of the Institute for Mathematical Machines and Data Processing at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . The focus of his work in Erlangen was the use of micro-programmed accelerators in high-performance architectures .

As spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 342 at the Technical University of Munich "Tools and methods for the use of parallel computer architectures", he worked from 1990 to 2000. In addition to his work as spokesman for KONWIHR (Bavarian Competence Network for Scientific and Technical High-Performance Computing), he founded the MMI (Munich Multicore Initiative). Modern multi-core microprocessor architectures are being researched there. In addition to his work as an advisory member in the committee for IT systems of the Max Planck Society , he was a longstanding member of the commission for computer systems of the German Research Foundation .

Arndt Bode was Vice President and CIO (Chief Information Officer) of the Technical University of Munich from 1999 to 2008.

Since 1994 he has been a member of the Commission for Computer Science of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (BAdW) . In 2002 he became a member of the board of directors of the Leibniz Computing Center (LRZ) . Since October 1, 2008, he has been chairman of the data center's board of directors. In 2007 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences elected him to its full member.

Since 1998 he has been the editor-in-chief of the Informatics Spectrum of the Society for Informatics . In addition, Bode performs numerous activities as a consultant for national and international companies.

He has been President of the Bavarian Research Foundation since January 2018 .
