Arne Månsson

Arne Månsson (born November 11, 1925 - January 11, 2003 ) was a Swedish football player . The defender , who took part in the 1950 World Cup with the Swedish national team , won the Swedish championship several times with Malmö FF .

Career

Månsson started playing football at Malmö Sport , but when he was 19 he joined local rivals Malmö FF in 1944. In the team around Kjell Rosén , Erik Nilsson , Börje Tapper and Helge Bengtsson , who competed with the team as the reigning national champion in the Allsvenskan , he was initially one of the supplementary players . After the departure of Hans Malmström to Helsingborgs IF he inherited it and he established himself in the following years as a regular force in defense.

In the following years Månsson helped Malmö FF regularly landed in the top of the league and played for the championship title. First he triumphed with the club in the competitions in 1946 and 1947 in the national cup, before he won the Von Rosens Cup for the Swedish championship in the 1948/49 season with the team reinforced with players like Karl-Erik Palmér or Stellan Nilsson . So he moved into the field of vision of the selection committee of the Swedish national team and under coach George Raynor he made his debut on October 2, 1949 in the 8-1 win over Finland - Egon Jönsson managed a hat trick on that day between 7th and 17th minutes of the game - in the frame qualifying for the 1950 World Cup in Brazil in the national jersey.

The following year Månsson defended the title with Malmö FF by remaining undefeated throughout the season and only allowing two draws. After the end of the season he was included in the squad of the national team for the World Cup finals, but was not used in the third place. Again against Finland in the 1-0 victory on September 24, 1950, he played his second and last international match after the tournament.

Following the tournament, Månsson continued the series of games without defeat and only lost to AIK on the last day of the 1950/51 season , when the team was already again established as champions . The series established between 1949 and 1951 with 49 consecutive games without defeat is a record in Sweden to this day ( as of October 2009 ). In the season 1952/53 succeeded in winning the double with championship and cup victory .

In 1955 Månsson left Malmö FF and went to Trelleborgs FF as a player- coach . He later worked as a trainer at Malmö BI before returning to Malmö FF to get involved in youth work. Responsible for school football, he discovered some talents like Bo Larsson or Staffan Tapper .

Remarks

  1. The source given under web links (Sydsvenskan) gives two championship titles. During his active time at Malmö FF between 1944 and 1955, the team won a total of four championships. At that time, the eleven most frequently used players received a gold medal as an award, to what extent this applies to Månsson is not clear from the data.
