Helge Bengtsson (born December 19, 1916 in Malmö , † February 10, 2001 ) was a Swedish football player . The goalkeeper , who was Swedish national champion four times with Malmö FF , played an international match for the Swedish national team .

Career

Bengtsson joined Malmö FF in 1934. In 1937 he made his debut for the team in the Allsvenskan and was able to establish himself as a regular player. Two years later, the goalkeeper came to an unofficial international match when the national selection faced the English club Arsenal . In the 1943/44 season he celebrated his first major success at the side of Kjell Rosén , Börje Tapper and Erik Nilsson , when the team won the Von Rosens Cup for the championship title with five points ahead of IF Elfsborg and AIK the club's history and won the Svenska Cup in the same year .

In the following years Bengtsson played regularly with the club for the championship title. First he triumphed with Malmö FF after final victories in the competitions in 1946 and 1947 in the national cup, before the team reinforced with players like Karl-Erik Palmér or Stellan Nilsson won the Swedish championship again in the 1948/49 season . For this he was rewarded by the selection committee of the Swedish national team and under coach George Raynor he made his debut on October 2, 1949 as part of qualifying for the 1950 World Cup in an 8-1 victory over the Finnish national team in the national jersey. Since the selection team was well filled with Kalle Svensson and Torsten Lindberg in the goalkeeping position, this was the only international match for the 32-year-old at the time.

The following year, Bengtsson defended the title with Malmö FF by remaining undefeated throughout the season and allowing only two draws. Including the next season, when the title was won again, the team set a record when they remained without defeat in 50 consecutive games across the seasons. Only on the last matchday of the 1950/51 season did the team receive their only defeat of the season at relegated AIK.

Bengtsson worked full-time for Statens Järnvägar , the Swedish state railway. At first he worked as a train driver, later he took on tasks in traffic management.
