Arnie Somogyi
Arnie Somogyi (born September 7, 1965 ) is a British jazz bassist .
Career
Somogyi, the son of Hungarian migrants, first learned the violin before switching to the electric bass and finally the double bass at the age of fourteen . He studied with Jeff Clyne at the Guildhall School of Music and then played in the bands of Ben Castle, Claire Martin , Tommy Chase , Alan Skidmore , Clark Tracey , Tim Whitehead and Peter King . He also worked as a studio musician. After a visit to Hungary he founded the band Improvokation with the guitarist Zsolt Bende, first as a quartet, then as a tentet . He also founded the quartet Ambulance (to which saxophonist Paul Booth , pianist Tim Lapthorn and drummer Dave Smith belonged) and with Bende, Tony Lakatos , Liam Noble and drummer Winston Clifford the Cold Cherry Soup (album of the same name 2001). In 2012 he performed with a Mingus program.
He taught at the Conservatory of Birmingham .
