Arnljot Eggen (born August 13, 1923 in Vingelen , Tolga municipality , † February 4, 2009 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer . He mainly wrote poetry and children's books , both on Nynorsk and on Bokmål . He also translated Polish and Russian poetry together with Martin Nag .

Life

Eggen grew up in the village of Ålen in Sør-Trøndelag . His parents were Emma Kvernmo and Eystein Eggen , a merchant who had also published poems and novels and who was close friends with Johan Falkberget . Arnljot Eggen began writing as a child and published poems in newspapers.

After he had to interrupt school for some time during the Second World War and began an apprenticeship as a baker in Tolga , he received his Abitur in 1944. He then attended the teachers' college in Elverum until 1947 and then worked as a journalist and teacher in various places. At the same time he published poems in newspapers and first books. His debut, the volume of poetry Eld og is , was published in 1951. From 1960 to 1965 he worked at the Norsk Folkemuseum on Bygdøy . After his literary breakthrough, which he had with the book Eit hovud i havet published in 1965, he lived as a freelance writer in Oslo.

While his early work is attributed to symbolism , Eggen wrote satirical literature critical of capitalism from the late 1960s ( Sprekker i muren ). In the 1970s he turned increasingly to Marxist-Leninist ideas, especially Maoism . He regularly published in the newspaper Klassekampen , wrote battle and protest songs and the play Pendlerne , with which he protested against exploitation.

Eggen received several literary prizes, including the Critics 'Prize for the best children's book in 1981 and the Dobloug Prize in 1985. From 1965 to 1969, he was also a board member of the writers' association Den norske forfatterforening .
