He completed a painting training at the Art Academy of Odessa with Kyriak Kostandi and Gennadi Ladyschewski, later since November 14, 1903 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich at the painting school Marr, at the painting school of Anton Ažbe and since 1904 at the Imperial Art Academy in Saint Petersburg , since 1907 with Ilya Efimowitsch Repin . In 1908 he visited Palestine , fell ill and had to stay until 1910. During this time he taught at a craft school in Jerusalem . From 1912 he lived in Saint Petersburg.
