Arnold Forstmann (born June 16, 1842 in Düsseldorf ; † 1914 or later) was a German landscape painter . In addition to the typical ideal landscapes in the tradition of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , Forstmann created a large number of vedute , especially of places in the Rhine Valley and the Alps.

Life

Arnold Forstmann entered the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the third quarter of 1867 . He studied there in Oswald Achenbach's landscape class . In February 1872 he left the academy, his last teacher was Albert Flamm . Arnold Forstmann is listed as deaf and mute in the student lists of the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He lived in Düsseldorf until 1889, then his traces are lost. The appearance of southern German motifs suggests that he, like many of his painter colleagues, went on extensive journeys.

Services

Forstmann's paintings are usually very detailed. The basic composition is supported by the use of strong contrasts, as well as the palette, which is often tailored to a uniform basic color. According to the late romantic painting tradition, staffage figures are often used.

In the ideal landscapes composed by Forstmann one always finds the landscape elements mountains, individual houses or huts, rivers and lakes. The latter are usually enlivened with a boat full of people or a distant steamship.

His vedute are not true-to-life images of the landscape. As a rule, Forstmann changes certain elements of the landscape in such a way that the image is as great as possible. In doing so, however, the landscapes shown never lose their connection to the real views.

In addition to the landscape paintings, hunting paintings and genre portraits are known.

Works

In addition to the well-known views of the Rhine Valley ( Rolandseck , Nonnenwerth and Drachenfels , Stolzenfels Castle ) and the Alps ( Chiemsee , Königssee ), composed landscapes are particularly well-known, e.g. B. a wild and romantic mountain stream lined with mills with a swaying bridge or lovely, sunlit alpine meadows with a stream. Forstmann also created views of fjord landscapes and navies.

A large number of pictures have come down to us. They are mostly designed in landscape format 66 × 48 cm or in portrait format 52 × 42 cm. Larger and smaller formats differing from these dimensions are also known.

Arnold Forstmann painted many of the motifs several times. In the meantime, series of up to four identical paintings are known, with the motifs occasionally also being available in different formats. Not infrequently, Forstmann also painted counterparts; about two landscapes at different seasons, but also symmetrically related motifs. All of this could be an indication that he produced larger series of images for the art market.

signature

Arnold Forstmann's paintings are generally not dated. However, there are a few exceptions that make it possible to narrow down Forstmann's life data more precisely. The two known signature variants of the always unchanged signature «A. Forstmann »allow an approximate chronological classification of the paintings in early works (signature variant A) and medium or late works (signature variant B) appear possible.

Well-known dated works are: Alpensee (1869), Oberwesel am Rhein (1883), Sommertag in Altenahr (1904), Südländische Marine (Cologne, 1905) and a designated genre portrait In Andacht (1914).
