particularities Secondary summit of Gasherbrum II

The Gasherbrum East is a summit of Gasherbrum in the Karakoram on the border of Pakistan and China .

Unlike other peaks in this group (e.g. Hidden Peak , Gasherbrum II or Gasherbrum IV ), it is not considered a mountain in its own right, as it does not meet the criteria of notch height and dominance defined separately for the Himalayas . It counts as a secondary summit of Gasherbrum II or as a relatively independent main summit and is located on the southeast ridge of Gasherbrum II, between the main summit and Gasherbrum La , the pass between G II and the Hidden Peak.

Ascent history

In the summer of 1983 the two Poles Jerzy Kukuczka and Wojciech Kurtyka climbed Gasherbrum II over the southeast ridge. To acclimatize, they first climbed to the previously unclimbed Gasherbrum Ost, which they reached on June 24th. After a bivouac on the summit, they descended to base camp to climb the G II a few days later. On the way to the main summit (July 1st) they crossed the Gasherbrum Ost. The ascent was done in alpine style .

On July 7, 2006, Gasherbrum Ost was first climbed by a Swiss expedition from the Chinese north side. The mountaineers were able to climb the north face of Gasherbrum II for the first time. Due to the danger of avalanches, Ueli Steck , Hans Mitterer and Cedric Hählen decided to forego the further descent and ascent over the ridge to the main summit.
