Arnold von Burgsdorf , also Arnold von Burgsdorff (* before 1471; † June 17, 1485 ) was as Arnold Bishop of the Diocese of Brandenburg and as this Prince-Bishop of the Bishopric of Brandenburg . He ruled from 1472 until his death.

Live and act

The year Arnold von Burgsdorf was born is not exactly known. He came from the old Brandenburg noble family Burgsdorff . His father's name was Siegmund, his brother was Ludwig von Burgsdorf , who later became the bishop of the Lebus diocese . In 1471 Arnold became provost .

After Bishop Dietrich IV ( Dietrich von Stechow ) died in 1472 , Arnold von Burgsdorf was initially elected by the Brandenburg Cathedral Chapter , in violation of the nomination right of the Brandenburg Elector Bishop of Brandenburg. This sovereign right had existed since 1447 under Frederick II. After this violation of his rights, the elector Albrecht Achilles intervened and Arnold von Burgsdorf first had to declare his resignation. After Elector Albrecht Achilles proposed Arnold von Burgsdorf for election to the cathedral chapter, he was elected a second time. On October 5, 1472, the official confirmation of the bishop's election by Pope Sixtus IV took place. The coronation of the new bishop took place on February 13, 1473 in the Brandenburg Cathedral , the cathedral of the diocese.

Bishop Arnold published new statutes in 1475 and 1483, and in 1477 he confirmed the validity of those of his predecessors. As bishop he was a guest at the wedding of Margrave Johann, later Elector Johann Cicero , with Margaret of Saxony and at the moving-in celebrations of the new Magdeburg Archbishop Ernst . In the following years, several extensions and renovations were made to the town church in Neustadt St. Katharinen . On July 21, 1482, Bishop Arnold was ordered to a camp in Koenigsberg with his followers based on a resolution of the state parliament in Cölln .

Arnold von Burgsdorf died on June 17, 1485. He was buried in the Brandenburg Cathedral.
