Arnold Mercator

Arnoldus Mercator (born August 31, 1537 in Löwen , † July 6, 1587 in Duisburg ) was a cartographer .

Life

His father was the famous cartographer Gerhard Mercator , who created the first map of Europe (1562) and compiled the first collection of maps, the atlas "Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura", which was created in 1595 by Arnoldus brother Rumold after the death of his father was issued.

Arnold Mercator created the first city map of Cologne in 1570 with the Cologne cityscape from 1570 , which was based on precise calculations and served as a guide for the city plans created later. He also created many maps in the Bergisches Land .

The map of the borders of the Bergisches Amt Windeck and the rulership of Homburg from 1575 is very well known. The map was copied in 1995 by Hans Weirich and reissued with the help of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein - Oberberg department.

Arnoldus Mercator's sons Johannes (1562? -1595?), Gerhard (around 1565–1656) and Michael (around 1567–1614) were also cartographers.
