Arrhenatherum palaestinum is a species of the sweet grassfamily(Poaceae).

description

Arrhenatherum palaestinum is a perennial Horst - Hemikryptophyt , the stature heights of usually 50 to 100, rarely reaches from 40 and up to 120 centimeters. The lower internodes are spherical and bulbous thickened. The loose panicle is 10 to 20 centimeters long. The spikelets are usually two-flowered and 11 to 13 millimeters long. The axis between the upper and lower flower is 1 to 2 millimeters long. The lower flower is male. Its lemma is glabrous and at its base is a 15 to 27 millimeter long, kneeled awn . The upper flower is female or hermaphrodite. Their lemma is not awned and has hairs 2 to 3 millimeters long. The anthers are 4 to 5 millimeters in size. The fruit is 4.5 to 5 millimeters in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or 28.

Occurrence

The species occurs from the eastern Mediterranean to Iraq. In Crete it grows on rubble heaps, in Phrygana and in pine forests at altitudes of 300 to 1400 meters.
