Arthur B. Singer

Arthur Bernard Singer (born December 4, 1917 in New York City , † April 7, 1990 in Jericho , New York ) was an American animal painter who primarily specialized in bird illustration.

Live and act

Singer comes from a family of artists and grew up in central Manhattan . He graduated from Cooper Union in 1939 and then worked as a printer in an advertising agency. In 1942 he joined the United States Army , where he was in C Company of the 603rd. Camouflage Engineers served.

Influenced by Carl Rungius , Louis Agassiz Fuertes and Wilhelm Kuhnert , he worked as a full-time illustrator and artist from 1955.

Singer illustrated more than 20 books, including Field Guide to Birds of North America (by Bertel Bruun , Herbert S. Zim and Chandler S. Robbins ), Field Guide to Birds of Europe , Birds of the World (by Oliver L. Austin , German : Die Vögel der Welt ), The Life of the Hummingbird (by Alexander Skutch ), Field Guide to Birds of the West Indies (by James Bond and Don R. Eckelberry ), State Birds , Zoo Animals , Birds of Greenland (by Finn Salomonsen ), Cats , Wild Animals from Alligator to Zebra , British and European Birds in Color (by Bertel Bruun, German: Europa Vogelwelt in Farben ), Der Kosmos-Vogelführer: The birds of Germany and Europe in color (by Bertel Bruun and Claus König ) , The Hamlyn Guide to Birds of Britain and Europe (by Bertel Bruun), Book of Birds in Color (by Robert Porter Allen ), Water and Marsh Birds of the World (by Oliver L. Austin, German: Wasser- und Watvögel der Welt ) and Birds of the Caribbean . In 1956, eight drawings of United States state birds and flowers appeared in The American Home magazine .

In 1982 he and his son Alan D. Singer illustrated a series of 50 state birds and flowers for the United States Postal Service . These are among the best-selling individual commemorative stamp issues in the history of the US Postal Service.

Singer was friends with the jazz musicians Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway . The latter was portrayed by Singer in 1932.

Singer died of pancreatic cancer in April 1990 .
