After breaking off a technical and commercial apprenticeship at the age of 17, Wilhelm Kuhnert was a scholarship holder of the Royal Academic College for Fine Arts from 1883 to 1887 . From his residence in Berlin , he made trips to the north, Egypt , East Africa and India to undertake landscape and animal studies. His favorite motif were the African lions.

His marriage to 18-year-old Emilie Caroline Wilhelmine Ottilie Alvine Herdikerhoff in 1894 resulted in a daughter. The marriage ended in divorce in 1909 after Emilie had left Kuhnert while studying in Ceylon .

1901 as an illustrator by him together with the zoologist appeared Johann Wilhelm Haacke wrote animal life of the earth . In 1903 he worked for the Cologne chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck with designs for Stollwerck collector's pictures and designed, among other things, a series of pictures for scrapbooks No. 6. and No. 11. He also contributed numerous illustrations to Brehm's animal life (born in 1900).

In his second marriage, Kuhnert married Gerda von Jankowski in 1913, who died in 1925 on his 60th birthday.

Contrary to what was customary at the time, Kuhnert did not study and draw tropical animals in zoological gardens, but in the wild. He made pictures using the techniques of drawing, etching , watercolor and oil. Kuhnert is considered to be the most important German animal painter of his time. He was not only a painter and illustrator, but also a hunter and often undertook heavy exertions in order to kill and paint his motifs in the wild.

Kuhnert died on February 11, 1926 while on vacation in Switzerland . His grave is in Block Epiphany, Garden Block I, Garden Point 85/86 on the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf near Berlin. His gravestone is decorated with a lion relief by Georg Roch based on a drawing made by Kuhnert himself.
