Detlef Lorenz

Detlef Lorenz (born December 6, 1938 in Hirschberg im Riesengebirge ( Jelenia Góra ); † February 4, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German cultural-historical researcher and author.

Life

Lorenz studied art history and journalism at the Free University of Berlin . He then worked in advertising and information in industry for 40 years. In his research and publications, he first dealt with the history of advertising, especially with old advertising collector's pictures (e.g. Liebig pictures ) and the artists who designed such pictures; The result is the monograph Advertising Art around 1900 . In cooperation with the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin, he developed exhibitions on this topic. This resulted in extensive research on lesser-known or forgotten visual artists, especially from the first half of the 20th century, among others. a. Jewish artists (e.g. David Friedmann) or artists from Gerhart Hauptmann's circle ( Josef Block , Johannes Maximilian Avenarius ). His best-known work is Künstlerpuren in Berlin , a general overview of creative and memorial places of visual artists in Berlin from the baroque to today. With numerous contributions, Lorenz was an employee of the General Artists' Dictionary as well as co-editor and lecturer of the annual conference volumes of the Bild Druck Papier working group . He was able to complete his last book project on press draftsmen and press illustrations in Berlin during the Weimar Republic , but died shortly before the publication was published.
