Konrad Vanja (born December 1, 1947 in Leipzig ) is a German folklorist and was director of the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin from 2000 to 2012 .

Life

Vanja studied folklore / European ethnology, Protestant theology and sociology at the Philipps University of Marburg and received her doctorate in 1977 under Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann on a topic of the social history of Hesse in the 19th century. He then gained experience in scientific museum work at the Lower Saxony Open Air Museum in Cloppenburg, at the Museum of the City of Rüsselsheim and at the German Tool Museum in Remscheid. Vanja had been working at the Museum für Deutsche Volkskunde (now the Museum of European Cultures of the National Museums in Berlin - Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation ) in Berlin since 1981: initially as a research assistant, later as curator and chief curator. From 2000 he headed the Museum of European Cultures until his retirement in December 2012. He has lived in Ansbach since then . His successor at MEK was Elisabeth Tietmeyer .

In his research Konrad Vanja deals primarily with popular graphics and intercultural contacts, whereby the relationship between Germany and Poland is particularly close to his heart. He designs exhibitions and publishes a. a. on the subjects of European popular graphics, luxury paper, vivat ribbons, jewelry and custom, the picture trade in Europe and the history of the European freedom movements in the 19th century. In addition to his diverse scientific committee work, Vanja is co-founder and co-editor of the series “Arbeitsskreis Bild Druck Papier”. In March 2006 he was awarded the Cavalier's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland .

From 1995 to 2005 Vanja was second chairman of the German Society for Folklore . Since 2008 he has been chairman of the Adolf Reichwein Association and since 2010 chairman of the Bild Druck Papier working group .
