Wolfgang Michalka (born August 8, 1943 in Freudenthal , Sudetenland ) is a German contemporary historian . From 1997 to 2006 he was director of the memorial for the freedom movements in German history in Rastatt Castle .

Life

Michalka was born in what was then the Sudetenland. After graduating from high school in 1963, he passed the teaching examination and initially worked as a teacher . From 1970 to 1977 he was a research assistant at the History Department of the University of Mannheim . In 1976 he was at Manfred Schlenke at the Faculty of History and Geography with the dissertation Joachim von Ribbentrop and the German England policy to Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Frankfurt am Main . From 1979 to 1986 he was a research assistant or university assistant at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1986/87 he went to Italy to study at the University of Florence as a Jean Monnet Fellow .

From 1988 to 1997 Michalka was editor at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau and Potsdam . From 1997 to 2006 he was head of the memorial for the freedom movements in German history (branch office of the Federal Archives ) in Rastatt Castle. In 2001 he became an honorary professor at the Institute for History at the University of Karlsruhe . His research focus is contemporary history, in particular the two world wars and German foreign policy in the 20th century.

He was u. a. Co-editor of the supplements to the journal Neue Politische Literatur in Franz Steiner Verlag .
