Memorial site for the freedom movements in German history
The memorial for the freedom movements in German history in Rastatt , known as the Freedom Museum for short , deals with the liberal democratic traditions in Germany. It was opened on June 26, 1974 by the then Federal President Gustav Heinemann . The content structure and the institutional responsibility were transferred to the Federal Archives . From 1997 to 2006 Wolfgang Michalka was the head of the memorial site.
The memorial was housed in Rastatt Castle. Rastatt was an important scene of the Baden Revolution and thus of the struggle for freedom of 1848 . The museum is a central station on the Straße der Demokratie from Frankfurt am Main to Lörrach .
On the occasion of 20 years of German unity , the memorial site was expanded in 2009 to include the permanent exhibition on the opposition and resistance in the GDR . Both the section on the revolution of 1848/49 and the section on the freedom movements in the GDR serve to illustrate the Germans' struggle for freedom.
