Arthur Ernest Gordon
Arthur Ernest Gordon (born October 7, 1902 in Marlborough (Massachusetts) , † May 11, 1989 in Oakland ) was an American classical philologist .
Life
Arthur Ernest Gordon studied Classical Philology at Dartmouth College , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1923 . He then deepened his studies at the American Academy in Rome . In 1925 he became a lecturer in Latin at Dartmouth College, and in 1928 at Western Reserve University . After receiving his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University (1929), he became an Associate Professor of Latin and Ancient History at the University of Vermont in 1929 . As early as 1930 he moved to the University of California, Berkeley as an Associate Professor of Latin , where he was later appointed Full Professor . From 1948 to 1949 he held research at the American Academy in Rome. In 1952 he was president of the Philological Association of the Pacific Coast . From 1953 to 1959 he held the chair for Classical Philology; from 1955 to 1956 he was a Guggenheim Fellow and Fulbright Fellow . After his retirement, Gordon taught at college in Ashland, Ohio and at Ohio State University .
Arthur Ernest Gordon was a great epigrapher . He also applied his knowledge of Latin inscriptions to Latin grammar, the exact knowledge of which formed the focus of his teaching. Gordon was also involved in the publication of Latin inscriptions in the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum .
