Richard Josef Brunner (born April 23, 1933 in Tirschenreuth , Upper Palatinate ) is a German linguist and philologist .

Life

Richard J. Brunner studied German , Classical Philology , History , Linguistics , Philosophy and Education at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and Comparative and Indo-European Linguistics with a major in Sanskrit at the University of Innsbruck . It was founded in 1967 with a thesis on at the University of Innsbruck Johann Andreas Schmeller to Dr. phil. PhD . Brunner entered the Bavarian civil service and was initially a grammar school teacher for German and Latin, later a study advisor in Munich. In 1971 he moved to the University of Ulm and set up the department for research and teaching planning.

In 1974 he became head of the MTA school, which he expanded into a school center for paramedical professions at Ulm University. Brunner integrated the School for Medical Documentaries (1976) and the Municipal Nursing and Children's Nursing Schools (1982) and founded the School for Speech Therapy (1978), the School for Radiology Assistants (1980), the Midwifery School (1983) and the Dietician School (1985). From 1974 to 1998 Brunner was Senior Academic Director and Head of the School Center for Non-Medical Professions at the Ulm University Hospital and converted the school center into the Academy for Health Professions .

Brunner also taught medical terminology and medical history for medical students at Ulm University . He was chairman of the examination commission for the German language test for foreign students, stimulator and promoter of the fundamentals of the teaching subject German as a Foreign Language (DaF) in Ulm. He also taught psycho- and patholinguistics . He was instrumental in founding the Ulm Humboldt Study Center for Philosophy and the Humanities, where he taught linguistics, language philosophy and Latin. In addition, Brunner held teaching positions at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich , the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences and the Swabian Academy Augsburg.

In 1988 he was appointed full professor for Indo-European studies at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich. In 1993 he was appointed honorary professor at Ulm University.

Act

Brunner is considered an expert in the life and work of Johann Andreas Schmeller . He also became known for his research on the German language islands in northern Italy and the Cimber language . He is a member of the Committee for Dialect Research of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Together with the neurologist Hans Helmut Kornhuber , he developed the field of knowledge of aphasia in Ulm .

Richard J. Brunner was committed to the German language and has been giving German lectures and lectures at Ukrainian universities for years . Brunner is the initiator and organizer of the Bavarian-Ukrainian Germanist Days, which have been held alternately in Lemberg and Munich since 2001 with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation .

In 1998, together with Leonid Rudnytzky and Hans Gerhard Stockinger, he played a key role in the continued existence of the Ukrainian Free University in Munich .

Brunner was a long-term liaison professor of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung (HSS) for scholarship holders at the University of Ulm, the universities of applied sciences in Ulm and Neu-Ulm as well as the Biberach University .

Since 1955 Brunner has been a member of the Catholic student union KDStV Radaspona (Regensburg) in Munich and in 1973 co-founder and active sponsor of AV Suebo-Danubia in Ulm , both in the CV . Brunner is a reserve officer (lieutenant colonel) and a member of the CSU .

Honors

Richard J. Brunner has received several honorary doctorates and academic awards for his work , including:

  • 1967 - Member and co-founder of the Innsbruck Linguistic Society (ISG)
  • 1969 - Member and co-founder of the Bavarian Cimbrian Board of Trustees for research into the old German language islands in Northern Italy (VII and XIII communities, Lusern)
  • 1971 - Schmeller Medal from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences
  • 1985 - Silver Cross of Honor of the Bundeswehr
  • 1999 - Schmeller Prize from the Johann Andreas Schmeller Society
  • 1999 - Full member of the Shevchenko Society of Sciences
  • 2008 - Honorary Professor of the Volodymyr Vynnychenko State University of Kirovograd
  • 2009 - Honorary Professor of Ternopil State Pedagogical University
  • 2010 - Honorary member of the Ukrainian Association of German Teachers and Germanists (UDGV Lwiw / Lemberg) and the Association of Ukrainian University Germanists (UHGV Kiev)
