Arthur Goetz

Arthur Goetz (* 1885 ; † 1954 in Mexico ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

As a member of the Novembergruppe Berlin, Arthur Goetz took part in their exhibitions between 1920 and 1923. Artists such as Otto Dix , George Grosz , Raoul Hausmann , John Heartfield , Hannah Höch , Rudolf Schlichter and Georg Scholz from the left wing of this group wrote an appeal in 1921 that was directed against the so-called "bourgeoisisation" of art. The November group was accepted into the cartel of progressive artist groups in Germany in 1922 .

Arthur Goetz emigrated to France in 1936 and to Mexico in 1941, where he died in 1954.

Arthur Goetz's visual language is strongly influenced by the architects and the abstract tendencies of the November group . He designed u. a. graphic contributions for the literary-political avant-garde magazine Die Aktion . As an artistic employee of "Die Aktion" (Vol. 8, No. 39/40, October 5, 1918) he is listed in the MoMA artist directory together with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff , Wilhelm Schuler , Ines Wetzel, Walter O. Grimm, Bruno Beye , Wladislav Skotarek, Josef Čapek , Franz Wilhelm Seiwert , Julius Kaufmann and Erich Goldbaum named as envelope designers .

The well-known art collector Henri Nannen was one of the first to save Arthur Goetz's lost work from oblivion by purchasing and collecting his works. In 1983 he donated his collection, consisting mainly of paintings and sculptures from German Expressionism, to his hometown Emden . In 1986 the specially built art gallery was opened in Emden .

The exhibition Expressionismus² (March 14 - July 5, 2015) in the Buchheim Museum in Bernried, with works from the Lothar-Günther Buchheim and Henri Nannen collections , also featured a painting by Arthur Goetz. With this return to the ranks of renowned representatives of Expressionism , Arthur Goetz, who was temporarily forgotten, is back in the consciousness of art lovers.
