Arthur Häny

Arthur Häny (born June 9, 1924 in Ennetbaden ; † July 16, 2019 ) was a Swiss writer and translator .

Life

Häny grew up in Aargau , studied German literature and classical philology at the University of Zurich and received his doctorate there in 1948 with a dissertation on Friedrich Hölderlin . From 1948 to 1989 he was the main teacher for German, then for German and Ancient Languages ​​at grammar schools at the Cantonal School in Zurich . He was with the painter and children's book author Marieluise Häny, geb. Müller, married, had two children and lived in Zurich. He died in July 2019 at the age of 95.

Its literary production began in 1951 with the volume of poetry Pastorale . Further poetry and prose appeared in the following years, including the novels Das Fräulein mit dem Schöne Kind (2000) and Die Fahrt in die Glückseligkeit (2001). In 2003 a volume of collected poems (Being and Being) was published .

His annotated translations of the Song Edda (1987) and the Snorra Edda (1991) are valued for their shortness, which distinguishes them from the pathetically exaggerated translations of the 19th century. In his volume of essays The Poets and their Homeland (1978) he examined the relationship to homeland and the changing understanding of the fatherland among Swiss and German authors.
