Arthur the Lion Tribe
Arthur Löwenstamm (born December 20, 1882 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia , † April 22, 1965 in Manchester , England ) was a German rabbi and non-fiction author.
Life and effect
After his training at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau and the rabbinical examination passed in 1910, he worked in Pless in Upper Silesia until 1916 . On December 6, 1916, the congregation in Berlin-Spandau elected him their first permanent rabbi. Arthur Löwenstamm took up his post on April 1, 1917 and held it until autumn 1938. In this function he also gave religious instruction at the schools in Spandau. He was a member of the Association of Liberal Rabbis .
On November 9, 1938, the Spandau synagogue was also set on fire during the November pogrom . Rabbi Arthur Löwenstamm was mistreated, arrested and deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp , from which he was released at the end of the year. He managed to escape to Great Britain , where he met his two daughters who had already emigrated in 1938 on February 1, 1939 . From May 1945 he was Director of Studies of the British Association for Jewish Studies (BAJS) and a member of the Association of Rabbis from Germany in London . From 1945 he worked temporarily as a rabbi in West Berlin .
On August 15, 2002, Löwenstammstrasse in Berlin-Spandau was named after him.
The daughter Erika Reid has transferred his written estate to the Leo Baeck Institute (LBI) in New York.
