Robert Calderbank
Arthur Robert Calderbank (born December 28, 1954 in Bridgwater ) is an American computer scientist and mathematician .
Calderbank studied at the University of Warwick ( bachelor's degree in 1975) and at the University of Oxford ( master's degree in 1976) and received a PhD in mathematics ( algebraic coding theory ) from Caltech at Marshall Hall in 1980 . He then went to Bell Laboratories , where he was most recently Vice President for Research. In 2003 he became Professor of Electrical Engineering and Mathematics at Princeton University and Director of the Applied and Computational Mathematics Program, and in 2010 Professor and Dean of Science at Duke University .
He was one of the developers of space-time codes (STC) for wireless communication systems. With Andrew Steane and Peter Shor , he developed the CSS code for quantum error correction .
In 2013 he received the Richard W. Hamming Medal and in 2014 the Claude E. Shannon Award (for 2015). In 2005 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering and in 2012 a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
He is married to the mathematician Ingrid Daubechies and has two children with her.
