Schmidt was German junior champion in 2001 and 2003. In 2004 and 2005, the Marler won the Westphalia and West German championship titles. In 2003 the boxer took part in the German Elite Championships for the first time and won a bronze medal in the lightweight category (up to 60 kg). The following year he reached the final, but lost it to Enrico Wagner (33:22). Also in 2004 Schmidt was nominated for the EU championships in Madrid , but dropped out in the first fight. After losing again to Enrico Wagner in the semifinals of the German Championships in 2005, Schmidt was able to prevail in 2006 and became the German lightweight champion for the first time. As such, he took part in the military world championships in 2006 in Warendorf and won the gold medal by defeating the highly regarded Russian Maxim Ignatjew with 38:29 on points. In the same year he also took part in the European Championships in Plovdiv , where he lost in the round of 16 to the later bronze medalist Oleksandr Klyuchko, Ukraine (36:23). In 2007, Schmidt successfully defended his title at the 85th German Championship in Wolfenbüttel against the highly rated Eugen Burhard. The fight ended 28: 8 in favor of the boxer from Marl. The 22-year-old was then unanimously named the best technician in the German championship by the association trainers and sports officials. He then took part in the World Championships in Chicago and failed there after a controversial decision against the 2003 silver medalist Pichai Sayotha , Thailand (23:21). Schmidt attempted to catch up on the missed qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing at the European Olympic qualification tournaments in Pescara and Athens , but failed once at the 2005 World Cup runner-up Romal Amanov , Azerbaijan (25: 9), and the other time at the later silver medalist Olympic Games Daouda Sow . Thereupon Schmidt decided against a change to the professional camp in Hamburg in the Universum stable of promoter Hans-Peter Kohl and the associated change to light welterweight , in order to achieve his stated goal: participation in the Olympic Games in London 2012 .
