Arun Singh

Arun Singh (* 29. August 1944 in Kapurthala , Punjab ) is a former Indian politicians of the Indian National Congress , among other things, 1984-1988 member of the Rajya Sabha and at times was Minister of State.

Life

After attending the renowned The Doon School in Dehradun, Arun Singh graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and then a Master of Arts (MA) degree . His fellow students included Rajiv Gandhi , grandson of India's first Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and son of future Prime Minister Indira Gandhi , who later became Prime Minister himself.

After finishing his studies in 1971, Arun Singh started working as a manager at The Metal Box Company and then at the consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser . On April 3, 1984 he became a member of the Rayja Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament , for the Indian National Congress , to which he was a member as representative of the state of Uttar Pradesh until August 17, 1988.

After Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister after the murder of his mother Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, Arun Singh became his Parliamentary Secretary and held this office until September 1985. In November 1985 he was appointed to its government and took over the office of Minister of State for Defense Research and Development. In July 1987, however, he had to resign in the wake of the Bofors scandal .

He later served as an advisor to Defense Minister Jaswant Singh from 2000 to 2001 . His marriage to Nina Singh had two sons and a daughter.
