Jaswant Singh (born January 3, 1938 in Jasol , Barmer District , Rajasthan ; † September 27, 2020 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician who was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) until he was expelled in 2014 and included finance minister as well Foreign Minister was.

Life

Member of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha

After attending Mayo College, Singh first completed an undergraduate degree , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a degree in social sciences with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and then worked as a social worker.

In 1980 he was elected as a representative of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the first time as a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian parliament , and in 1986 he was re-elected for a second legislative term. During that time, he served on the House of Lords Committees on Public Accounts, Privilege, and Public Corporations between 1986 and 1989. In 1987 he was also a member of the Advisory Committee on the Situation in Punjab and from 1989 to 1991 a member of the Committee on the Advisory Committee on the Energy Act.

In 1990 he was elected a member of the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian parliament, in the ninth legislative period , and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in the tenth legislative period in 1991. He served there from 1991 to 1996 as chairman of the lower house committee on estimates and chairman of the lower house committee on environment and forests. In 1992 he was also a member of the Parliament's Joint Committee to Investigate Irregularities in Securities and Banking Transactions, and in 1993 he became chairman of the House Committee on Energy.

After Singh was elected in 1996 for a third period in the eleventh Lok Sabha, he was from May 16, 1996 Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of Finance (Union Minister of Finance) in the Cabinet appointed but this office has held just fifteen days until the end from his reign on June 1, 1996. He held the post of foreign minister until June 23, 2002 and was replaced shortly after by Yashwant Sinha . In addition, he served between February and October 1999 as Minister of Electronics (Union Minister of Electronics) and from August 6 to October 13, 1999 as Minister of Transport (Union Minister of Surface Transport) .

Singh, who was re-elected a member of the Rajya Sabha on October 15, 1999, took over the post of finance minister in the 3rd Vajpayee cabinet for the second time on July 1, 2002 as part of a cabinet reshuffle from Yashwant Sinha and remained until the end of Vajpayee's term of office on May 22, 2004 in this ministerial post. In addition, he served from March 18 to October 15, 2001 as Minister of Defense (Union Minister of Defense) and then from July 1, 2002 to April 9, 2003, the additional office of Minister for Company Affairs (Union Minister of Company Affairs) .

In 2004 Singh was elected a member of the Rajya Sabha for a fifth term, and became opposition leader there . During this time he was a member of the Upper House Committees for Science and Technology and for Environment and Forests between August 2004 and August 2006. At the same time he was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee for the display of portraits and statues of national leaders and parliamentarians in the Parliament Building (Sansad Bhavan) from August 2004 to May 2009 and became a member of the Upper House Committee on General Affairs in August 2005.

In 2009, Singh was again elected a member of the Lok Sabha for a fourth term and belonged to this member during the 15th legislative period until the election of the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014 . During this term, he was chairman of the House of Commons Committee on Public Accounts from August 6 to December 31, 2009, and was a member of that committee thereafter. At the same time he was a member of the budget committee from September 10, 2009 until he left the Lok Sabha.

On March 29, 2014, Singh was expelled from the BJP after running as an independent candidate against the official candidate of the BJP in the constituency 17-BARMER in Rajasthan in the parliamentary election.
