Arx Fatalis (Latin: "Fatal fortress / refuge") is a published in 2002 3D - computer role-playing game development company Arkane Studios (u a.. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic ). The game was released for Windows and Xbox .

Backstory

The player wakes up in a rotting prison cell with no memory of his past. You learn from your cell neighbor that you are in the subterranean, medieval world of Arx and that humans and other creatures fled into it after the sunlight went out hundreds of years ago and now eke out their gloomy existence here. After breaking out of the cell, you escape through underground catacombs until you come across a pillaged human outpost. Here you get the order to visit the King of Arx and to warn him that the so-called Ylsiden - dangerous warriors with tremendous abilities - have launched an attack. So the main character, who is actually just looking for his identity, is unexpectedly drawn into a story that will ultimately turn out to be more than he seems to be. Namely the one who will prevent the evil god Akbaa from being resurrected.

Game world

Arx is a completely underground world in the style of the Ultima Underworld games, which mainly consists of cave complexes and catacombs. There is only one larger city, namely the eponymous city " Arx ", which is located in a huge cave , in which the king of the people also lives in a castle. Otherwise one only finds smaller settlements of humans or buildings of other races here and there. Many areas are kept quite gloomy and are only sparsely lit by the torches attached to the walls . In the extensive dungeons you can often find the remains of humans as well as (living) rats and spiders, which increases the already gloomy atmosphere.

Game mechanics

Arx is an interactive world. The player can bake bread, brew potions, fish, work and improve weapons, light torches and fireplaces (also to roast on them) and pick up and throw objects such as stones and chairs. As usual in a role-playing game, he can also talk to people, act and use or combine switches and objects. Weapons wear out over time and can break. Items from the inventory can be placed on the floor and are also later where you left them. Kind-minded people are only friendly as long as one does not attack or steal from them. Characters remember the actions of the player and groups stick to one another.

Development history

The architecture of Arx Fatalis is heavily influenced by games from Looking Glass Studios , especially Ultima Underworld . The developer, Arkane Studios, stated that Arx Fatalis was originally planned and developed as Ultima Underworld III , but they could not obtain a license to release it as such. Porting for the Xbox was carried out by the French development studio Wizarbox .

German version

The German version of Arx Fatalis was completely translated and dubbed relatively professionally. B. the two from South Park known voice actors Jörg Stuttmann , speaks u. a. Polsius and various other residents of Arx, and Donald Arthur as the trolls, heard. The German version was also censored. In the original version, it is possible to sever body parts from some creatures. In addition, more blood splatters on hits. Furthermore, some ambient objects, such as body parts lying around, have been removed from the game. However, it is possible to completely reverse these censorship measures by installing the current official patch and changing an entry in a file.

Source Code Disclosure

On 14 January 2011, the developer has the source code of the engine under the terms of the GNU General Public License published. There were several projects based on the source code, e. B. Arx Libertatis with the aim of making the source code platform-independent as well as fixing remaining bugs ( community patch ).

In April 2012, the Arx-Libertatis project published a first adapted version of the disclosed Arx-Fatalis engine, for the first time for platforms such as Linux and FreeBSD that were not supported until now . The last iteration of Arx Libertatis 1.1 from July 2013 fixes some serious timing issues in the original game.

Translations of the game were also made by fans in languages for which the game had never officially been released, e.g. B. in Polish , Turkish and Korean .
