As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls is a fusion album by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays , recorded by Jan Erik Kongshaug in September 1980 and published by ECM in 1981 .

background

The music for the album was created after Mays and Metheny experienced the devastating Red River Valley Tornado in Wichita Falls , Texas on April 10, 1979. The tornado , which killed 56 people and injured over 1900, caused $ 840 million in damage to Wichita Falls alone .

With the title track of the album, Mays and Metheny dedicated the first page of the album to the tornado. Similar to a tornado, the music of the piece, which lasts over twenty minutes, gradually gains strength.

A highlight of the album is the track "September Fifteenth", which is dedicated to Bill Evans . The pianist died on that date while the album was being recorded. The piece is a calm and slightly wistful piano and guitar duet.

A piece from the album was selected as the backdrop for the Christian Dior TV commercial for Fahrenheit in 1988.

reception

Steven Cook reviewed the album on allmusic : "This is certainly a worthwhile CD for fans ... but is not essential".

Richard Cook & Brian Morton said in the Penguin Guide to Jazz succinctly “ lot of pastels ” and only gave the album 2½ stars.

The album topped the Billboard jazz charts for 36 weeks. The title track was nominated in 1981 for a Grammy in the category "Best Instrumental Jazz Composition".
