Asher Peres ( Hebrew אשר פרס; *  January 30, 1934 as Aristide Pressman in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne , France ; † January 1 , 2005 in Haifa , Israel ) was an Israeli physicist . He is considered one of the pioneers of quantum information theory .

Life

Peres was born in France to Polish parents of Jewish faith. He was given the name Aristide because the maternal grandfather's name, Asher , desired by the parents , was not allowed. In the same year the family, like all guest workers, had to leave France due to the global economic crisis . In 1938 Peres took French citizenship and returned to France with his parents from Poland. There the family survived the Second World War . In 1949 they emigrated to Israel. Peres changed his first name to Asher and Pressman's surname to Peres .

Peres studied at the Technion in Haifa and at the nuclear research center in Saclay near Paris and received his doctorate in 1959 with a dissertation on gravitation theory under the supervision of Nathan Rosen and was (apart from short stays abroad) worked as a lecturer and professor at the Technion from 1959 until his death.

plant

In more than 250 publications, Peres made important contributions in the areas of gravitation theory (including gravitational waves ) and quantum field theory and to the fundamentals and interpretation of quantum mechanics . He was one of the pioneers of quantum information theory. Among others, he was one of the discoverers of quantum teleportation with William Wootters , Charles H. Bennett , Gilles Brassard , Claude Crépeau and Richard Jozsa in 1993 and proposed the Peres-Horodecki criterion to distinguish entangled and separable states.
