Ashley is a small town in southern North Dakota on the South Dakota border and is part of McIntosh County .
history
The place was named in 1888 after Milwaukee Railroad executive Ashley Morrow . Since then, for more than 100 years now, the community has firmly clung to its German-Russian roots. Today it has about 775 inhabitants. Almost all residents of this city and the surrounding area have German-Russian ancestors. These immigrated from the Black Sea region, especially from Bessarabia, at the beginning of the 20th century .
Many residents, especially the older generation, still speak German with a Swabian accent. The city is located in the middle of the American prairie not far from the Missouri River . The film Dances with Wolves was shot in the immediate vicinity .
Ashley is the administrative seat of McIntosh County which also includes Wishek, Venturia, Cold Lake and Danzig , the latter (Danzig) is now a hamlet with only 3 inhabitants.
The area around Ashley is surrounded by farms and Lake Hoskins (approx. 5 km west of the city) on which it was originally founded. The local school teaches kindergarten through 12th grade. The city is struggling with a high level of emigration , especially of the younger generation , and the associated aging population, as every second inhabitant is over 60 years old.
