Askø is a Danish island in Smålandsfarvandet ( German : Smålandsfahrwasser ) north of the island of Lolland . The island has a size of 282 hectares and is permanently inhabited by 37 inhabitants (January 1, 2020). The island forms its own parish Askø Sogn , which originally belonged to Harde Fuglse Herred in the Maribo Office , from 1970 to the Maribo Municipality, then Storstrøms Office, and since the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 to Lolland Municipality in the Sjælland region . There are around 200 summer houses on the island.
Askø is connected to the smaller island of Lilleø ( small island ) by a 700 meter long dam . The dam, built around 1915, expanded the agricultural possibilities for the islanders.
Askø belongs to the Association of Danish Small Islands .
On the side facing Lolland there is a smaller marina for 20 ships. A ferry provides the connection to Bandholm on Lolland; the crossing takes 30 minutes.
