Asmus Bremer (* before 1652 ; † July 31, 1720 in Kiel ) was a mayor of Kiel.

Life

Asmus Bremer came from a family that had lived in Kiel for several generations. His grandfather Hinrich Bremer was a shoemaker and obtained Kiel citizenship in 1626. His father Asmus Bremer the Elder was a wine and beer dealer.

Bremer's exact date of birth is not known. His name is not entered in the baptismal register of the Nikolaikirche in Kiel, which began in 1652 , so that it can be assumed that he was born earlier. It is known that in 1670 he began to study law at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, which had only been founded a few years earlier, and then became a lawyer and later a judge. He was also head of the St. Jürgen poor house and the Neugasthospital.

In 1688 he was elected councilor and in 1702 mayor of Kiel. Initially, he held this office alternately with Michael Pauli every year . In 1711, the entire Kiel council, including its mayors, fell out of favor with Duke Karl Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf and his secret councilors Magnus von Wedderkop and Georg Heinrich von Görtz . Bremer was removed from office. After Pauli's death in 1713, however, he was reinstated as mayor and held the office as sole mayor until his death. During his tenure, Asmus Bremer tried to strengthen Kiel economically and to establish the city as an important port city.

Asmus Bremer was married to Dorothea Catharina Clausen and had four daughters and a son. One daughter died early, another and the son were disabled. His wife survived him, but after his death was in such dire financial position that she had to sell his city chronicle to the city for 44 Reichstaler.

Asmus Bremer is best known for his contributions to research into the history of Kiel. He personally looked after the city archives, and his work Chronicon Kiliense tragicum-curiosum (tragic-curious chronicle of Kiel) is an important source to this day. It describes accidents and crimes that took place in Kiel between 1432 and 1717. The chronicle is based on an older work of Flintbeker pastor Martin Coronäus and was supplemented by Bremen with material from the Municipal Archives.

In addition, Bremer compiled old Kiel documents and files dating back to 1241 and wrote a description of Kiel's electricity and beach law . Apart from a poem in homage to Friederike Amalia , the widow of Duke Christian Albrecht , none of his works were printed during his lifetime.

Afterlife

Asmus Bremer was considered a particularly popular mayor. A sculpture created in 1982 by the artist Frauke Wehberg on Asmus-Bremer-Platz named after him in 1976 in Kiel's Holstenstrasse commemorates him. He is sitting there on a bench, "in the midst of the people, where his favorite place was also during his reign".

He and his wife are symbolic figures of the Volksfest Kieler Umschlag , at the beginning of which "Asmus Bremer sien Büx" ( Asmus Bremer's pants - a flag) is hoisted on the tower of the Nikolaikirche.

A lifeboat was also named after Asmus Bremer .
