The Assa ( Kazakh Аса ; Russian Асса ( Assa ) in the upper reaches Teri ( Теріс ); Russian Терс ( ester )) is a river in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia .

The Assa rises in the Qaratau ridge in the extreme south of the Schambyl area . In the upper reaches the river is called Teris . It flows in an easterly direction. At Nurkent it flows through the Teris Asjibulak reservoir . It takes on several right tributaries that arise in the Talas-Alatau . Over a distance of about 10 km it forms the state border between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The river curves to the north and later to the west. It flows west past the city of Taras . Shortly afterwards it passes the town of the same name Assa and reaches the Mujunkum desert. The river flows into Lake Biliköl . He leaves this in a northerly direction, flows through the lake Aqköl and the place Aqköl . Eventually it turns west and flows parallel to the Talas River , which runs north , before draining into the desert.

The Assa has a length of 253 km. The catchment area covers 9210 km². The river is fed in a variety of ways, from snowmelt , meltwater from the glaciers and precipitation . Before the river leaves the mountains, it has an average discharge of 12 m³ / s. Some of the river water is diverted for irrigation purposes .
