The Atago class ( Japaneseあ た ご 型 護衛艦, Atago-gata Goeikan ) is a class of two guided missile destroyers of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF) and an improved version of the Kongō class .

General

It is the Japanese variant of the Arleigh Burke- class (Flight IIa) of the United States Navy . Compared to the Kongō class and the Arleigh Burke class (Flight I), which have only one helipad , but only limited support accessories and in particular no hangar, this class has a hangar for the permanent transport of two helicopters .

An Aegis fire control system , which consists of Japanese and American components, was installed as the fire control system for the Atago class . The armament of the Atago-class destroyers is similar to the armament of the Kongō-class destroyers. Due to the Japanese constitution, which prohibits the Japanese armed forces from possessing any offensive weapons, the Atago class does not have tomahawk cruise missiles . However, if the increasingly generous design of this passage were to increase further, it would not be technically a problem to retrofit this capability.

accident

On February 19, 2008, the Atago collided with a fishing boat off the coast of Chiba Prefecture . The destroyer was on its way back from a maneuver near Hawaii to Yokosuka and rammed the fishing boat amidships. Torn in half and floating on the surface of the water, the wreck was later towed into a port. The boat's crew, 58-year-old Kichisei Haruo and his 23-year-old son Tetsuhiro, could not be found despite an intensive search by the coast guard and the marine self- defense forces .
