Atanasio de la Cruz Aguirre Aguado (born June 2, 1801 in Montevideo , † September 28, 1875 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician .

Life

Cruz Aguirre, who belonged to the Partido Nacional , the Blancos , was initially Minister of War between 1833 and 1838 and, after the Uruguayan civil war in 1852, became a member of the 6th legislative period initially for Minas (however, he retired early on March 4, 1854 Office) and then re-elected to the Cámara de Representantes in the 8th legislative period for the Departamento Paysandú . There he took over the office of President of the Chamber in 1853 after serving as the second Vice-President of the House of Representatives the previous year. In 1858 and 1859 he again exercised the function of the first vice-president in this political institution.

Elected to the Senate for the Salto Department in 1861, he took over the Senate presidency from Eduardo Acevedo in 1864 . In this capacity he then replaced President Bernardo Prudencio Berro in the state leadership on March 1, 1864 and remained until February 15, 1865 interim President of Uruguay . In August 1864 the Uruguayan War began . The Brazilian Empire declared war on the government in Montevideo and supported the Colorados , as it did in the Uruguayan civil war . The troops of the Blanco government had little to oppose the superior Brazilian land and sea ​​forces . The siege of Montevideo began in early February 1865 . Cruz Aguirre was overthrown and Tomás Villalba took over the presidency for a few days on February 16, 1865. After taking Montevideo, the rebel leader Venancio Flores was appointed his successor on February 20, 1865.
