Athena Donald

Dame Athene Margaret Donald (born May 15, 1953 ) is a British physicist . She is a professor at the University of Cambridge and has been a Masters at Churchill College since 2014 .
Life
Athene Donald studied at Girton College, University of Cambridge until she received her PhD in 1977 . After four years as a post-graduate student at Cornell University , she returned to Cambridge and continued her research in the Cavendish Laboratory .
Donald is mainly engaged in experimental soft matter research using electron microscopy , X-ray scattering, and neutron scattering . Her book Liquid crystalline polymers , published in 1992, became the standard work on polymers and was last published in 2006 in its tenth edition.
In 1998 Donald was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics. She is also a fellow of the Robinson Collage at the University of Cambridge, the Royal Society , the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics . In 2009 she was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .
In 2009 she received the UNESCO L'Oréal Prize .
In 2010 she was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as Dame Commander .
Donald is married and has two children.
